Water in the Desert, My Mentors

When we arrived at this Park, I went through about 8 months of desert-like conditions. The day we drove up with our last load, the Park maintenance guys had cut a tree down on our gas line, meaning no hot water or stove. Later that afternoon I took a pregnancy test and found out that yes indeed Littlest Buckaroo was on his way. Of course, after losing a baby the year before, I was fearful. On top of this, my father in law came and stayed 2 weeks to help us. I appreciated his help but having one extra person in the house to cook and clean for while newly pregnant and unpacking added a little stress. I was exhausted and this was just the beginning. I continually cried out to God, ignorantly asking to be relieved of this discomfort. Not seeing what He was doing in my life.

A few weeks later, two people drove up to our gate. They were from a local church that had a ministry that brought bread to newcomers in the community. I will never forget that day, it was the first light for me in this dark place. (Thank you Ron and Calvary)

About a week later, the phone rang, I answered it and there was the sweetest voice on the other end. Have any of you ever experienced someone that just has a Godly sweetness that just calms you, who makes you just feel better with one word? That was Lydia for me. She was the wife of the preacher from the church that had brought the bread to our home. We talked for about an hour about our lives. Before we hung up, Lydia said something to me that I can still hear in my head today. She said, “we would love for you guys to come visit the church, but even if you don’t, I would love to be your friend.” Wow, the light was starting to shine through.

So many young women today, like me, do not live near extended family and miss out on the help of mothers and grandmothers in learning how to be a Godly wife and mother. They have a need for a woman who has “been there” and “done that” to come along side them to build a relationship that offers support and encouragement. Everywhere we have lived, God has placed very special women in my life from Johnnie (aka Nana to my boys) on the mountain to my current mentor/friend Penny who I met at Calvary. (unfortunately, Lydia has moved).

Penny is an exceptional wife and mother, she homeschooled her three children and they are all exceptional human beings that love the Lord. I knew nothing about homeschooling, not that it even existed before Penny (and Lydia). Her insights have guided me through some very turbulent waters. She has provided me with child-rearing skills that have worked and not only am I a better mom because of her but my boys are well-adjusted, happy, loving children that are a pleasure to be around.

Mentors are very important, if you do not have one, whatever stage in your life that you are in, pray that God will lead someone to you. Or, seek out that cute Park wife kind of girl (hehe) that is in need of your mentoring. Read Titus 2: 3-5.

I must go now, my friend Penny is coming over today and I am so excited!

Good friends are hard to come by. As a military wife, I often find that the first ones I meet when we move to a new duty station are the ones that I keep in touch with long after I've moved to the next duty station.
Yay for friends like Lydia and Penny.
Have fun with your friend today!

God has blessed you with mentors! How wonderful!

I have had very few in my lifetime, now in my forties God has blessed me with several!

And I'm excited to start mentoring a twenty something mom this week!

Great read. I describe myself in my blog as "been there and done that". Exactly.
I don't really know why but I started bawling, so I guess I better sign off.
