What a ruckus! Have you heard all the hoopla about the Tim Tebow ad during the upcoming Superbowl? Yes, I thought you had.
Wow, it has set off a firestorm of reactions from groups that oppose Focus on the Family, like the National Organization for Women (don't you love these names?) who do not approve the message of the ad. Surprise, surprise.
Also, there are many parents that are up in arms because their children will be watching the game and are concerned about them seeing the commercial. I guess they have no problem with the very scantily clad women beer commercials that their little Bobby will watch. Hmmm, concerned about societies priorities.
Anyway, I don’t want this blogpost to be about the ad but about raising men of Godly character. And, Time Tebow is a wonderful role model.
He was the first home schooled (woo hoo) athlete to be nominated for the Heisman Trophy (he won it), two-time National Champion Quarterback, recipient of numerous other awards and most of all, Tim Tebow is a real man of God.
He faces constant scrutiny from the media about his “religion” and about his motives for preaching at prisons and doing evangelistic work in the Philippines, but he always backs up the questions with his actions. 1 Peter 2:12 “Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God.”
He could have spent his college Spring breaks partying in Florida hooking up with any girl he wanted, after all he is one of the most famous college quarterbacks. Nope, he spent them ministering to orphans in the Philippeans. Oh, and yes he is a virgin. The media asked him this question at a press conference. Um, I am not sure they ask all the football player interviews that question.
Not only is Tim a role model (finally a positive athlete role model), I would say his family sets a great example for raising Godly children as well. If you look closely at the Tebow family, it’s easy to see why Tim seeks to glorify God with his life... It’s because Tim Tebow's mom and dad raised him to fear and love the Lord.
Tim has taken what God has blessed him with and is sharing with others. Not staying in a little box and witnessing only to those that show up in their limited little group or judging people for not being of his faith. He not only stands up for what he believes, he lives it.
As a mother of two young boys, I pray that I stay focused on the prize. I believe everyday we have to concentrate on our boy’s character development and not get so caught up in today that we lose focus of the kind of men we want our boys to be at the age of 20 and 30.
It takes discipline and deliberate effort to build character. With prayer, scripture, and wisdom we can use everyday life to equip our children to make tough choices in an increasingly tough world. It is a daunting task for this mom (and I fail often), but one that I am taking on, for much is as stake.

AMEN!!!!!!!!!
These days, I feel like I'm the odd one out--my husband and I were both virgins when we got married. It's good to see people in the spotlight who choose to follow the same path. :)
Yes, I am so thankful for him. Let's not forget to pray for him, especially since he'll have new pressures in the limelight and lots of impressionable eyes following him.
Amen. Thanks for this post and the reminder of just how important those every day moments with little boys - and little girls - are. God bless mommies and help us keep on keepin' on!
A guy I went to high school with now lives in FL and goes to church with the Tebow family. He said that what we see of Tim really IS Tim - a truly Godly young man. I can only pray that my children will be so strong in their convictions as they grow - especially if they are in the limelight like that young man is.
Go Tim! It takes a real man to be a "real" role model.
Gotta love the things people get theirselves into a bunch about. And as long as I am at it, why is it thatthe people who are pro-abortion are aginst the death penalty?
Tim Tebow is awesome! I think that the commercial is a great idea.
I, personally, won't be watching the Super Bowl this year. Not because of the Tim Tebow commercial...but because of the halftime show. Pete Townsend will be playing. He was convicted in England of possession of child pornography. I refuse to support any event that will allow him to take part.
As we no longer watch TV in our house anymore, I honestly don't know what you're referring to. But I'm going to google it now. :) Is he a quarterback on one of the superbowl teams? I would love to see this commercial that you're talking about. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
Thanks for finding me so I could find you :D! I will be posting my dinner party hopefully today. But I am with ya on this Tebow thing...he is an amazing kid. I sent an email out to everyone I know to go to MSNBC.COM and vote YES for them to air the commercial. Hoping they listen....
I could go on for days on this topic don't get me started!
Thanks for the comment! I'm quickly becoming a huge fan of PW. :) And I LOVE Tebow...great post! :)
Apparently I have been living under a rock because I have heard NOTHING about this situation. So...I promptly googled it. And Holy Cow! Your word 'ruckus' is sure right! And how sad that something as positive as this young man's story is getting such a negative response. Astonishing.
And as the mother of a tiny young man, I completely concur with your post! =)

Amen, sister!!! I'm so glad you posted this! Keep up the great work with those young men of yours, mine is now 33yr and raising a fine crop of his own!
Very well written Steph, God will honor you and Big Buckaroo for all of your hard work.
Great post!
I'd heard a little mention of this from friends all the way over here in China. I enjoy watching the Superbowl ads if I'm in the States, or some years I look them up online for fun, but so many these days use images of the body to sell things... bleh. I googled it to find out more, and I was irked by the wrap-up of NPR's article (which took the angle of "we want fun, not serious stuff"):
"Joseph Spilatro says he's not eager to see broadcasters open the door to controversial ads."
Hm, they've had those before. Just controversy in the other direction, so to speak! Best Superbowl ad I've ever seen, though, was one of those ad-council ones, where this guy talked about how his wife died of lung cancer from smoking when she "was only 46." He kept repeating that, while my college dormmates kind of talked over him... then he ended with "I just I never thought of 23 as middle-aged." Suddenly, you could hear a pin drop in our dorm!
Strawberry cake, do you have that link to msnbc? I don't see it on their sports page, but apparently CBS is the network airing the commercial, so I guess the decision is up to them in the end. I've never seen 2 networks cover the game before, but NBC certainly has a lot about it on their page... huh.
Keep up the good work. We need to train our young men dilegently to 1 Reject Pasivity, 2 Accept Responsibility, 3 Lead Courageously and 4 Expect the Greater Reward.
And plan time for them to walk along with their Dad. They may not jump at the opportunity but the time and the conversation along the way is important.
Watched the ad and what is the big deal??? The org, NOW says it promotes violence against women because he tackled his Mom, they need to get a life!!!! Keep praying!
